  • Angel and her friends were trying to sell their eggs for money and one girl Laura was chosen for her eggs. Angel and her friends have big dreams to be successful but they didn't have much money to help them except Laura.
  • When Angel got pregnant, she decides to lean on Laura for support.  She struggles with the decision on whether to keep the baby or abort it. She tells her father expecting him to be mad but finds him accepting. She states, "I wanted to hurt somebody, and so far it wasn't working" (75). She then goes to her boyfriend, Rafael who wants to make it work and keep the baby.
  • She goes to the clinic to abort the baby with Laura but finds herself not wanting them to call her number and decides not to go through it. She struggles with the fact of how much money it will cost and that she couldn't afford it resulting in Laura giving Angel money to help her.

Through this short chapter Angel struggles with money and acceptance. The friend that she didn’t like ended up helping her in the end, which proves to Angel how much she badly judged Laura and she was in fact one of the better friends she had. It is found it times in need and sorrow you know who your true friends are and that is what Angel found. She was also surprised at the fact that her father and boyfriend accepted and wanted her to have the baby because to her she knew she didn’t have the money for it.

One of the main lessons through this chapter is the struggle of teen pregnancy. Being pregnant as a teenager is one of the hardest things one can go through at that age. You are going through financial difficulty and loss of time but overall people cruelly judge you because you are young and unmarried. In Harvest, Evans gives you an inside look to this struggle. As the reader you watch Angel grow from handling things childish to maturely and more coming of age in the end. When the story starts she is already an outsider because of her financial problems and the color of her skin. So when she gets pregnant she feels even more of an outsider, which brings her down. Being pregnant affect the black female body as well. Besides the fact that she is black, her body is going to go through other physical changes with being pregnant which will cause her to stand out even more. It is hard enough to be a white pregnant teen, but being a black pregnant teen is even more difficult. At this day in age, the government also condemns girls who are pregnant at such at young age and because of this society follows. Angel shows us how she goes through this and her feelings through the whole process.

The word "punished" is such a harsh word to relate to a baby. When a young girl accidently gets pregnant the choice is a difficult one- keep, adopt, or abortion. The choice will probably be one of the most difficult choice you will have to make in your life but the overall thing you have to consider is what can you live with? Angel went through this same decision in Harvest and she wanted to get an abortion but her gut told her not to at the last second. In regards to this image our now president is making a strong statement about abortion that really struck with me personally. I couldn't believe he is relating an innocent baby to a punishment. The issue of abortion is very controversial in America and it is an issue that debated over and over so the choice really depends on the person. One of the main factors with teen pregnancy is becoming an "outsider" when your pregnant. You are looked at as abnormal and stupid for making a mistake, which is ridiculous, yes they  made a mistake but they should not be looked at any differently. Everyone wants to be an "insider" in high school or general society so this issue is a difficult one in Harvest and in real life.
What is your opinion of this image and teen pregnancy?

A good thing with society is the support from other people on websites and articles with advice. Here is an article helping girls handle with teen pregnancy: http://therealjuno.wordpress.com/

Television shows like MTV’s 16 and Pregnant advocates pregnancy and makes it look desirable. Young girls want attention and to be on television, so they begin to think that if they get pregnant there will be positive reinforcements. The media, especially MTV because its audience is teenagers, plays such a strong role in decision making process of young people. “If people on TV are doing it, I should do it too” are the thoughts of many young females. They are trying to become an insider, but by doing so they are losing one’s sense of self, and making themselves an outsider. This is another example of the way society sees teen pregnancy, which is making pregnancy as being an insider rather then an outsider which is the opposite of how Angel feels in Harvest.
