Picture
While Carla struggles to define herself by the reinforcement of male attention, there is a gray area of sexual dominance established by the paradox of owning one's sexuality and be subjected by it.  This image of Kelis, while provocative, shows an empowerment of the ownership that she holds over her body.  She is using her sexuality to promote her image as an artist, and paired with the statement on the side it really claims the idea that she is the controller of her Black Female Body.  She is representing her dominance over sex and creates her own agency of choice by deciding who gains access to her body.

What kind of shift has occurred in the way that we view black women's sexual identity? Has there been a shift?

I think that commonly black women are either seen as overtly sexual, referencing back to the stereotype of the Jezebel (see ch 2 post) or as entirely a-sexual, embodied by the mammy. However, I think that these terms are slowly being "reclaimed", meaning, as I think Kelis is doing in this picture, that many Black women are deriving pride from these derogatory terms in order to fight back against the stereotypes and claim agency in their portrayals.

I am really glad that you mentioned the idea that she is reclaiming her sexuality because I had that in mind when I found this picture. I love the way she takes control and becomes the possessor of her own body!

I also think its common that Black women are seen as overtly sexual and once again this links back to society and how this is portrayed with the media. There are several music videos from the past that display these overtly sexual images of Black women, which then leads society to believe what they see. I really think Kelis is doing a great thing here by showing her empowerment of her body, which is really proving a point to society.
